There are repercussions to our current consumer and growth-focused culture. Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff project, started five years ago, has awakened millions of people to the dangers of consumerism and the myth of “more is better than less,” a myth propagated by the marketing industry.

The Story of Solutions is the newest video from The Story of Stuff project. Leonard illustrates how our economy is like a game in which the goal is More. What if we could change to goal to Better?

Economy, the gameLeonard encourages viewers to push for solutions that change the economy’s goal from “more” to “better.”

The Story of Solutions explores how we can move our economy in a more sustainable and just direction, starting with orienting ourselves toward a new goal.

In the current ‘Game of More’, we’re told to cheer a growing economy – more roads, more malls, more Stuff! – even though our health indicators are worsening, income inequality is growing and polar icecaps are melting. But what if we changed the point of the game? What if the goal of our economy wasn’t more, but better – better health, better jobs and a better chance to survive on the planet?

The Story of Solutions

The video shows that solutions are “popping up everywhere that are beginning to turn the tide on how we make, use, and throw away Stuff.” Changing the goal from More to Better is a transformational process that involves all of us.

What we all want is a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle that ensures the survival of our planet, for our children and our grandchildren.
