I’m pleased to welcome Dorsi Diaz as a guest blogger on BoomerWarrior. Dorsi is a Writer, a Climate Change Activist and an Art Educator. She writes at HubPages and is also the climate change reporter for the San Francisco Examiner. Dorsi is an avid photographer and has been a working artist for over 25 years, exploring several different types of mediums, including fine arts, graphic design and photography.
Dorsi’s passion about unraveling the truth about climate change is an excellent fit with the BoomerWarrior focus on the Environment, Climate Reality, and Energy.
In a study just released, scientists report ominous news that abrupt shifts in climate are already happening world-wide and will continue:
“Climate is changing, forced out of the range of the past million years by levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases not seen in the Earth’s atmosphere for a very, very long time. Lacking action by the worlds nations, it is clear that the planet will be warmer, sea level will rise, and patterns of rainfall will change.”
In the report by the Committee on Understanding and Monitoring Abrupt Climate Change and Its Impacts; Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate; Division on Earth and Life Studies and the National Research Council, it is unclear what the future holds since man has never been witness to such a massive shift in climate:
“The future is also partly uncertain – there is considerable uncertainty about how we will arrive at that different climate.”
This is not new news for climate scientists who have been sounding the alarm bell for many years. Paul Beckwith, a part-time professor and a PhD student with the laboratory for paleoclimatology and climatology at the University of Ottawa, claims that,“We have lost our stable climate. Likely permanently.“
Beckwith also went on to say:
“Abrupt climate change. It is happening today, big time. The northern hemisphere atmospheric circulation system is doing its own thing, without the guidance of a stable jet stream. The jet stream is fractured into meandering and stuck streaked segments, which are hoovering up water vapor and directing it day after day to unlucky localized regions, depositing months or seasons worth of rain in only a few days, turning these locales into water worlds and trashing all infrastructure like houses, roads, train tracks and pipelines and also creating massive sinkholes and catastrophic landslides. And climate change is only getting warmed up.”
From Climate Central:
“Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities have already altered the climate. Most changes have been gradual, but the possibility of abrupt shifts concerns the scientific community.”
Anthony Barnosky, a paleoecologist at University of California, Berkeley, likened gradual changes to being able to see the road while driving. With unexpected changes, the “road drops out from under you,” he said at a press conference.
We are well on our way into unprecedented territory. Add to that record highs of methane being released from the Arctic and we may experience a dramatic shift of climate within a matter of years – also referred to as “runaway climate change”, “the tipping point” and “abrupt climate change.”
